Isaac Schmidt was wanted by clubs in the Bundesliga before joining Leeds United from St. Gallen this summer, his agent has confirmed.

Speaking to Leeds Live (16 September), Stephen Lang said that while a host of clubs were interested in the full-back, moving to Elland Road was Schmidt's best opportunity.

Schmidt arrived in LS11 on transfer deadline day as the Whites' final acquisition of the window, in a deal which could see them pay up to £4.6million for the Swiss defender [Blick, 30 August].

Lang said: "Other clubs were interested, including Bundesliga clubs, but Leeds are a club with tradition and a rich history.

"For us, it was clear that joining Leeds and moving to England was a great opportunity for Isaac."

Leeds United fans will expect big impact from Isaac Schmidt

The news that a side in England's second tier beat several Bundesliga clubs to Schmidt's signature will certainly spark optimism amongst an Elland Road faithful who are yet to see him in action.

Farke is yet to utilise his most recent new signing having made clear that Schmidt is still getting up to speed with the physicality of the Championship, but fans will hope they don't have to wait much longer.

A recent revelation by Angus Kinnear that the club are now well down the pecking order in terms of players' transfer preferences [The Square Ball, 12 September], suggests that the signing of Schmidt is a big statement.

The onus will now be on Schmidt to make the most of his great opportunity, and also on Farke to ensure that the versatile full-back is given enough time on the pitch to make a difference this season.

The first real taste of Schmidt saw him sign off his time at St. Gallen with a well-taken goal the night before his transfer, with optimism is high to see him do more of the same at Elland Road.
