Isaac Schmidt en route to sign Leeds United paperwork, plane has to stop for refuel
Isaac Schmidt is en route to the UK to sign for Leeds United, according to Graham Smyth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported via his personal X account on Friday (30 August) that the St Gallen full-back, 24, is on his way to Yorkshire to seal a deadline-day move.
It is understood that after playing – and scoring – for St Gallen in their Europa Conference League win against Trabzonspor on Thursday night (29 August), Schmidt is flying out of Turkey but having to stop to refuel before touching down in England.
Once he arrives, the Swiss versatile defender will then undergo a medical before the final bits of paperwork are concluded.
Smyth adds, however, that Schmidt won’t be eligible to play against Hull City on Saturday (31 August) because the cut-off for registration for this weekend’s games was at midday on Friday.
Ao Tanaka was signed in time from Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Who else will Leeds United sign on transfer deadline day?
It seems as though once the deal for Schmidt is done, the entrance door to Elland Road will be slammed shut.
Tanaka arrived earlier on Friday on a permanent basis from Fortuna Dusseldorf, adding some much-needed depth in the centre of Daniel Farke’s midfield.
Schmidt will then come in as a versatile full-back who can provide cover to both Junior Firpo and Jayden Bogle in the left-back and right-back roles.
Mateo Joseph is a great young prospect but can he be trusted to deliver goals on a consistent basis throughout the Championship season? Probably not.
Joel Piroe’s form has been woeful for ages and don’t get us started on Patrick Bamford.
Leeds fans will be disappointed if it ends with Schmidt. However, as a signing in itself, he seems like a good buy.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have had a £25million bid for this player accepted.
