Illan Meslier 'untouchable' at Leeds United as Fabrizio Romano shares Manchester United transfer development
Leeds United consider Illan Meslier as “untouchable” amid speculation linking the goalkeeper with a move to Manchester United, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Athletic reported on 12 August that Meslier, 22, is seen as a potential long-term replacement for David De Gea at Old Trafford but that Leeds have no intention of selling him this summer.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday (17 August), Romano reciprocated that and added that Leeds won’t be tempted by negotiations due to Meslier being a “key part of the project” at Elland Road.
Not going anywhere
Leeds may say that Meslier is “untouchable” right now but if the right money is offered for the 22-year-old, we’re sure that they’d have something to think about behind the scenes.
Victor Orta wouldn’t be doing his job correctly if he didn’t have an emergency list of players that he needs to use if something like a blockbuster bid came in for Meslier.
Let’s say something stupid like £50million is offered for Meslier right now. Leeds would probably accept that, wouldn’t they?
Well, they would if they had alternatives for Meslier on a shortlist somewhere.
Orta’s bound to know loads of young goalkeepers who are showing promise who could replace Meslier while he’s also bound to know about some established shot-stoppers too.
Meslier, for his age, is exceptional.
However, he’s not irreplaceable.
It’s good of Leeds to take this stance because it might at least ward off Man United’s interest for another year but at some point, someone will come in for Meslier and a decision will need to be made.
In other Leeds United news, a £35million-plus striker could be available for Leeds to sign him from 24 August.
