Illan Meslier transfer details emerge after Leeds United deadline day decision

Illan Meslier was linked with a move away from Leeds in the summer window.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Leeds in the space of just two weeks, with a lot of the concerns stemming from the transfer window.

Not only did the 49ers fail to back Daniel Farke at Leeds, but they also failed to secure exits for some of those who had been mooted for moves away from Elland Road.

Meslier was linked with Valencia, with details now emerging as to why the deal never went through in the dying stages of the summer transfer window.

Leeds did not want to sanction Illan Meslier exit

From the moment Farke opted to drop Meslier at Leeds, it seemed as though his exit was already written on the wall at Elland Road.

Leeds signed Lucas Perri from Lyon, and Karl Darlow maintained his place as the backup goalkeeper, leaving no room for the Frenchman in the Premier League.

However, he would go on to remain with the Whites after the window closed, with Graham Smyth detailing why via the Inside Elland Road podcast on 11 September.

He said: “It brings into light transfer deadline day again, there was interest in Meslier, and then Meslier didn’t go, and we asked why.

“We were told it needed to make sense for both the player and the club, and it hadn’t made sense for both parties, so he stayed.”

Daniel Farke drops Illan Meslier hint ahead of Fulham clash

Very few supporters will have any faith in Meslier after last season’s horror show, but it could be a good thing that he stayed at the club.

Lucas Perri will miss the next two Leeds games with injuries, having also suffered an injury in the early stages of his time at Elland Road before the season started.

Farke has praised Meslier ahead of Leeds’ encounter with Fulham, suggesting that he could be in with a chance of featuring, though Darlow remains the most likely to be handed a starting role at Craven Cottage.
