Illan Meslier makes frank Leeds United admission about the 2023/24 season

Illan Meslier had admitted that Leeds United didn’t get into the full swing of things last season until after the first international break.

Across the season, the Whites were one of the strongest teams in the second tier and were unfortunate to not gain automatic promotion after gaining 90 points.

The Frenchman was speaking to Leeds Live on 29 July and stated that the club will be better from minute one in 2024/25.

“When you lose in the final of the play-off, it’s always disappointing, that’s normal, but, after, you have time, once you go on holiday, to think everything about what happened,” he said.

“We gave everything, unfortunately, it happens, but, to be honest, this season we are in an even better position than last season.

“We will start the season with a lot of players who are very concerned (aligned) with the project of Leeds. It wasn’t the case last season. We will start from the first game and not after the international break of last season.

“It’s always been clear in my mind, I want to go back up with Leeds. There weren’t doubts, or things like this, in my mind.”

Leeds United set for stronger 2024/25 term

As Meslier mentioned himself, Leeds look set to be on course for a strong second season in the Championship.

Whilst there’s no denying that the club and players would rather be in the top flight, a second Championship season could be exactly what they needed.

The club has already welcomed the likes of Joe Rodon and Jayden Bogle to the club and looks to be strengthening their weakest areas.

The team was one of the top performers last term and narrowly missed out on automatic promotion thanks to the stellar form of Ipswich Town.

Whilst nothing is set in stone yet, of all the teams in the second tier, it feels as if Daniel Farke’s men are one of if not the strongest team in the league.

If they can manage to fill the void left by Archie Gray [Robbie Fowler, 21 July, page 73] as well as find a clinical finisher, the club could well be on course for a cruise to promotion.
