Ian Poveda told what to do in ‘careful’ Leeds United transfer verdict – Carlton Palmer

Carlton Palmer has tipped Ian Poveda to rejoin Sheffield Wednesday following a positive six-month spell at Hillsborough from Leeds United.

The 24-year-old joined the Owls during the January transfer window in search of more game time, having only made 10 appearances since Daniel Farke’s appointment at Elland Road.

The young winger quickly became an important player for Danny Rohl as the club escaped relegation, and will be out of contract at the end of this month.

Speaking via Football League World on Tuesday (14 May), Palmer said: “Ian joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan and has quickly become a fans’ favourite. He was part of the squad that stayed in the Championship and was a very integral part of that.

“He played very, very well and all the players speak very highly of Danny Rohl. I think Poveda has to be very careful now. He didn’t have game time at Leeds United, he needs to move somewhere where he is going to have game time.

“Of course, Burnley and Luton are going to be in the Championship next season, Sunderland are going to be in the Championship. I think the best fit for him is where he is, Sheffield Wednesday.

“Join a club where you enjoy, he’s become a fans’ favourite. Join a club where you’re playing regular football where you’re enjoying your football, where you’re enjoying playing for the manager.”

Will Ian Poveda leave Leeds United this summer?

Despite an extremely successful loan spell with the Owls, becoming one of the manager’s favourites, as well as a fan favourite, Poveda’s future with Leeds is over.

With the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Dan James and Wilfried Gnonto in the squad, there is little room left for the Colombian to stamp his mark at Elland Road and showcase his talents there.

It seems much more likely that the youngster will leave the club this summer, with several teams said to be interested following a decent spell before suffering an injury.

Despite recording just one assist in his time at Hillsborough, Poveda is already a much-loved figure at the club and could have earned himself a permanent move to another Championship club.

Leeds United

High on surviving Championship relegation this season, Wednesday appears to be an obvious option with more wages set to become available to spend at Elland Road.

He has only made 30 appearances since arriving from Manchester City in the summer of 2020 and has only just started to show what he is capable of with the ball at his feet.
