‘He’s far too good’ – talkSPORT pundit says Wolves star should be ‘template’ for Leeds new boy

TalkSPORT pundit Andy Brassell has claimed that Leeds United new boy Jean-Kevin Augustin is too good a player to be in the Championship

On Monday, Leeds confirmed the 22-year-old’s arrival on loan from RB Leipzig after it was agreed that his loan stint at Monaco would be terminated early.

Augustin barely featured for Monaco in the first half of the season, scoring one goal and starting just two Ligue 1 fixtures.

However he proved in his two full seasons at Leipzig that he is a capable goalscorer in the Bundesliga and Champions League, hitting the back of the net 20 times despite his young age.

Leeds now have Augustin to spearhead their attack in the second half of this season and Brassell, a football writer and broadcaster, claims that the Frenchman’s move to Elland Road reminds him of Ruben Neves’ switch to Wolves a few years ago.

“In terms of ability, he’s far too good for the Championship – but it’s not enough is it? He’s got to actually prove that he can positively influence a team,” said Brassell on Monday, as shown via talkSPORT’s official Twitter account.

“We’ve seen players before and I look at Ruben Neves, for example, and I thought ‘how would someone like that, who struggled to get into the Porto team, come an impose himself at such a young age in such a physically relentless, demanding league as the Championship?’. He made his class tell.

“And that’s got to be the template for Augustin. That’s exactly what he’s got to do.”

It is a good comparison by Brassell.

Neves arrived at Wolves as a Champions League player from one of Europe’s top clubs and those who had heard of the Portuguese midfielder knew he was way too good for the Championship.

After joining Wolves, Neves helped Wolves win promotion easily before continuing to play a key role in their midfield in the Premier League and Europa League.

Augustin was linked with Premier League clubs last year so there is a good reason to suggest he’s also too good for the Championship.

Leeds fans will be hoping that the French forward can do as Neves did at Molineux.
