Hernandez could be set for shock Leeds stay

Marcelo Bielsa has decided that he wants Pablo Hernandez to stay at Leeds United for another season, according to the Mirror.

Hernandez, 36, has struggled for game-time in the Premier League since Leeds’ promotion but the veteran remains popular among supporters and was handed a 15th league appearance of the campaign on Saturday when he came off the bench at Brighton.

He will enter the final year of his contract at Elland Road in the summer but despite speculation linking him with a move away from Yorkshire, it is now understood that Bielsa wants to keep the veteran Spaniard.

LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross has recently reported that a “gentleman’s agreement” could be reached this summer for Hernandez to move on while The Athletic’s Phil Hay has previously claimed that it feels like a goodbye season for the midfielder amid links with Castellon.

The Mirror now reports “Bielsa does not want to move him on this summer”, with the Leeds boss valuing the ex-Swansea player’s experience.

Unexpected – but brilliant

Hernandez has struggled in the Premier League this season, there’s no denying that.

He’s also found himself in Bielsa’s bad books with a poor reaction to being substituted off by the Argentine in the defeat to Leicester back in November.

Hernandez has started just twice in the Premier League so you would think that a player of his age would be surplus to requirements going into next season.

However, Bielsa may feel as though the Spaniard is someone who could play a major role behind the scenes at Thorp Arch.

Hernandez is as experienced as anyone else at playing for Bielsa and knows exactly what it takes to play for Leeds United.

He’s bound to have helped Rodrigo and Diego Llorente, fellow Spanish players, settle down at the club last year when they arrived and a similar plan might be on Bielsa’s mind ahead of this summer.

Hernandez is probably worth keeping for another year.

We doubt he’s on mega-money and he’s still capable of a big of magic, we hope.

In other Leeds United news, this Leeds player is the number one target for Pep Guardiola in the summer.
