Gudmundsson speaks out on Leeds United move after being ‘spotted’ at Thorp Arch

Leeds United have been linked with Gabriel Gudmundsson, and the defender has now spoken out over his transfer rumours.

Junior Firpo is set to depart the club, meaning the Whites will have to sign a new left-back, and the Sweden international is now on their radar.

Leeds will need to upgrade their squad to compete in the Premier League, and left-back is a key area to address.

Rumours circulated that Gudmundsson has been spotted at Thorp Arch training ground ahead of a potential move to Leeds, and he has now addressed this talk.

Gudmundsson denies Leeds visit amid latest rumours

Gudmundsson has now moved to deny speculation that he has already agreed to move to Elland Road, but did claim that he would like to play in the Premier League at some point.

Speaking to Swedish outlet Hallandsposten (26 June, sport section, page 2), Gudmundsson claimed that he has not decided anything with regard to his future.

“I can’t say more than that it’s a good team that plays in the Premier League,” he stated.

“A League and a country where I also have an ambition to one day play, given that I grew up watching that league. It’s a league that I appreciate very much.

“I can tell you that much that is not true. I am on vacation and havmy two weeks following the national team here at home,” he stated in response to rumours that he was spotted in Leeds.

“I was very clear with both Lille and my agent that I focus on the national team and then I have a vacation.

“It is very important for me to be able to switch off completely and be able to recharge for the coming season.”

Leeds could sign two left-backs this summer

Leeds have also been linked with Germany Under-21 defender Lukas Ullrich, with the departure of Firpo clearly a big blow.

Gudmundsson could arrive as a more experienced option, while Ullrich would join as a long-term prospect, and both could share the load from Firpo.

Neither got close to the 14 goals and assists Firpo provided from left-back in the Championship last season, but they could help make Leeds more solid defensively, which will be vital as they make the step up to the Premier League.
