Gretar Steinsson responds when asked about late summer Leeds United transfers

Tony Dorigo says he has spoken to technical director Gretar Steinsson about the remainder of the transfer window for Leeds United.

Speaking on the Square Ball Podcast [16 August], the former Whites left-back says Steinsson kept his cards very close to his chest and offered little response on the club’s current state of play, wanting to keep everything “in-house”.

Fans are growing anxious at Elland Road over the club’s transfer activity so far in this window, with Georginio Rutter set to be the latest high-profile ace through the exit door to the Premier League, with Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville already gone.

Dorigo said: “I spoke to Gretar. I asked him if there was anything he could tell me, and he just said, ‘I’m going to tell you nothing.

“He said that they want to keep it all in-house, and not go anywhere. So he wasn’t going to tell me anything, and really, that’s good.

“We shouldn’t be knowing. But at the same time – with the clock ticking – it’s a gamble, but I have confidence in what [the club] have previously done.”

Leeds United in tricky transfer situation

The next fortnight is paramount for Leeds United to get right – it’s season defining.

With a trio of top players now having left Elland Road, alongside plenty of others as the squad is trimmed – a little too much – further recruits must be brought in, both in quality and quantity.

Rutter’s departure now means just 19 recognised first-team players are in Daniel Farke’s squad, and rival clubs are catching wind of this air of almost desperation for incomings when approached by Leeds for their players.

It could turn into a situation where the club are held to ransom and forced to pay way over the odds for other clubs’ talent – not an ideal situation in terms of PSR, even with the huge amounts recouped on Rutter, Gray and Summerville.

Add into the mix that players such as WIlfried Gnonto may also leave before the 30 August deadline, it’s quite a precarious proposition for Leeds fans, who earlier in the summer were supremely confident of automatic promotion.
