Graham Smyth shares what Leeds United sources have told him about transfer – ‘100 per cent’

Leeds United are expected to be busy in the transfer market this month.

Daniel Farke‘s side are in the midst of a six-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, and are showing that they’re more than capable of survival this season.

However, if they are to make sure of their top flight status for the 2026-27 season, then adding a few more quality players to the side this winter may be vital.

Leeds held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield on New Year’s Day, in what was a superb defensive showing from the Whites as they move to 21 points.

Manchester United travel to Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, with the Red Devils tipped as slight favourites to beat Leeds as the two clubs renew their bitter rivalry.

Leeds handed transfer targets update

Fulham’s Harry Wilson has been linked with a move to Leeds, as have a myriad of players despite the January window only just getting started.

However, speaking via the Inside Elland Road Podcast, the Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief football writer Graham Smyth has poured cold water on the vast majority of the transfer rumours flying round Elland Road.

“I was also told by someone last week that, I think it was 99 per cent – if not 100 per cent – of the names that had been trumpeted so far by various sources were pure speculation, or agents using Leeds to boost the profile of their available player, which I think we see in every window, don’t we? So I wouldn’t put too much stock in a lot of the rumours you’ve seen so far,” Smyth said.

“There are no names to throw in just yet. So it’s still a watching and waiting brief.”

This is what Leeds should be targeting in January transfer window

Thumping wins over Chelsea and Crystal Palace in December, as well as two draws against Liverpool and a strong away point at Sunderland didn’t just put precious points on the board for Leeds, it revealed just how much quality is already at Farke’s disposal.

In Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Leeds have a striker back to his deadly best, and is making a strong case to be on the England plane for the World Cup this summer.

Ethan Ampadu, Brenden Aaronson, Anton Stach, Sean Longstaff, Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruev are a deep and strong midfield unit, whilst Jaka Bijol and Gabriel Gudmundsson have been excellent additions to Leeds’ defence.

Therefore, most departments in Leeds’ squad look talented and equipped with solid depth, and so this winter window doesn’t carry the feeling of the Whites needing seven, eight or nine players bringing in to make certain of their survival.

Instead, the addition of two-four classy players to improve what is a squad that has already shown that they can compete with the best teams in the Premier League, may be all that is required.
