Graham Smyth shares Leeds United stance on Yangel Herrera after agent moots enquiry

Manchester City midfielder Yangel Herrera is not on the shortlist of Leeds United this summer, according to Graham Smyth.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist was responding to a question on the Venezuelan star after a report from LUFC Fanzone, a well-established Instagram account that is followed by a number of Leeds players and has over 55,000 followers.

They spoke to Herrera’s agent, who said “Leeds have asked about the situation”, regarding his future, but Smyth appeared to shut it down somewhat on his personal Twitter profile later that day, claiming he is “not on the shortlist”.

However, LUFC Fanzone responded to this with a screenshot of a Whatsapp conversation, purportedly from Herrera’s agent, backing up their claim that there is interest at least.

They posted it on their Twitter handle, with the agent writing “at they moment they are asking about the situation, nothing more.”

Agent talk

Smyth is a well-respected journalist on Leeds so he’s likely to be in the know on transfer matters, and it appears Herrera is not on the list of targets, at least for know.

There may very well have been tentative enquiries from the Whites or representatives over Herrera, but there probably have been for tonnes of players, that’s just how the market operates.

More than likely, Herrera’s agent is trying to drum up interest for the player ahead of an important switch this summer.

He is contracted to Manchester City but is yet to play for them since moving there in 2017.

The 23-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at La Liga outfit Granada where he has impressed and he featured against Manchester United in the Europa League last season.

His energetic displays mark him as a good profile of Marcelo Bielsa signing but that doesn’t mean El Loco will necessarily go after him.

For now, it looks like any move is well and truly on the backburner.

In other Leeds United news, The Athletic claim the Whites are on the verge of sealing major signing within days.
