Graham Smyth provides ‘stunned’ update on Liam Cooper Leeds United future

Graham Smyth has shared that he would be “absolutely stunned” if Liam Cooper chooses to stay at Leeds United this summer.

The journalist reported this whilst replying to a fan via X on 23 July and added that although a future with Leeds doesn’t look likely, the Scotland international has no “imminent” exit route just yet.

It was over a week ago that Alan Nixon reported that Blackburn Rovers had made contact with the defender (11 July) but, as yet, nothing further has developed.

Leeds United legend Liam Cooper unsure where his future lies

It goes without saying that Cooper is a Whites legend and he has managed to forever etch his name in the history books of the West Yorkshire outfit.

The Scotland international joined the club during the 2014/15 season from Chesterfield and managed to rack up a total of 284 appearances after making his senior team debut in the same season he joined.

At the end of the 2023/24 season, the defender’s contract at Elland Road expired and despite Leeds’ offer of a fresh deal [LeedsLive, 2 July], it seems as if his future lies elsewhere.

Cooper is 32 years old and is entering the latter stages of his career but still has plenty to offer.

So it’s not a surprise that after making just eight Championship starts last term that he sees his future away from West Yorkshire.

Especially since it now seems likely that Max Wober is set to stay [Beren Cross, 19 July] with the club.

In other Leeds news, the Whites are set to face competition for the transfer of Jesurun Rak-Sakyi.
