Graham Smyth moots Daniel Farke issue as Leeds United transfer announcement made
Daniel Farke now has a depth issue at right-back to fix at Leeds United after Djed Spence returned to Tottenham on Thursday (4 January).
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist tweeted on Thursday that the 23-year-old could – and should – have been the “most exciting” loan signing at Elland Road this season.
He added that he expects the Whites manager to “speak plainly” about his reasons for sending the English defender back to Spurs after triggering a break clause in his loan deal.
“Could and should have been the most exciting loan signing at Leeds United this season,” said Smyth. “Expecting Farke to speak plainly about it tomorrow. Whatever the reasons for sending Spence back, they’ve now got a right-back depth issue to fix.”
Surprise
It has come as quite a surprise to see Leeds decide to take up the option to send Spence back to Tottenham after he has been starting games recently.
The defender had a difficult start to life at Elland Road after he suffered an injury on his debut against Sheffield Wednesday that kept him out for a couple of months.
After working his way back to full fitness last month, he started five of the past six games before being left on the bench in the 3-0 victory against Birmingham City on Monday (1 January).

Although Spence didn’t quite reach the heights expected of him in those games, he was asked to play out of position at left-back.
The Whites do still have a couple of different options that can play in both of the fullback positions, but they could be an injury away from having a major defensive issue in the second half of the campaign.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites could be set to call up a player’s agent to complete their first January transfer.
