Graham Smyth issues transfer update as Leeds United make Habib Diarra bid
Leeds United are reportedly keen on signing Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, with Daniel Farke keen on reinforcements.
The Whites have already signed former Manchester City striker Lukas Nmecha and are continuing to work on other deals.
Leeds have also reached an agreement with Udinese for Jaka Bijol, who’s likely to be their second arrival of the window.

Diarra not as likely as other transfer targets for Leeds United
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth (16 June), Diarra is viewed as a less likely capture for the Whites as compared to the other midfield targets.
This comes after it was understood that Leeds had tabled a bid of £21.8million for the Strasbourg midfielder. (L’Equipe, 9 June)
The Ligue 1 club have already signed a replacement for Diarra, making an exit likelier.
However, it’s understood that there will be other options considered by the hierarchy at Elland Road instead of the 21-year-old.

49ers must now broaden their search for a new midfielder
Leeds’ owners, 49ers Enterprises, must now broaden their search for a new midfielder rather than priortise Diarra.
While the 21-year-old is a promising signing for Leeds United, his lack of proven experience outside France and high transfer fee of over £20million make him a risky investment, suggesting they should target alternative midfielders.
The Strasbourg star has shown flair and versatility as an attacking midfielder.
However, his untested ability in the Premier League’s intensity, combined with a price tag exceeding the Elland Road outfit’s typical budget for unproven talents, raises concerns.
Competition | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Yellow Cards | Red Cards | Minutes Played |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ligue 1 | 30 | 4 | 5 | 6 | – | 2,357′ |
Coupe de France | 3 | – | – | – | – | 81′ |
Daniel Farke would instead prioritise midfielders like Noah Sadiki, who offer similar dynamism at a lower risk and lower transfer fee.
Diarra’s youth and potential are appealing, but Leeds’ immediate need to avoid relegation demands proven quality or cost-effective options.
Investing heavily in an untested player could strain their budget, making seasoned or budget-friendly midfielders better suited to bolster Farke’s system and ensure Premier League survival.
