Graham Smyth claims Liverpool have made no contact with Leeds United over Raphinha
Graham Smyth claims there has been no contact between Leeds United and Liverpool over a deal for Raphinha this summer.
Rumours have been swirling about the Brazilian’s next destination, with SportItalia journalist Gianluigi Longari tweeting earlier on Thursday that Liverpool “lead the race” for his signature, with Manchester City and Manchester United also in the hunt for the 24-year-old.
However, the Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief football writer Smyth has poured cold water on suggestions that anything is afoot.
He wrote on his personal Twitter profile: “Liverpool will definitely have interest in Raphinha. Most big clubs will. He’s a young winger who gave the Premier League serious problems.
“But Liverpool have never made contact with Leeds United over him. And you have to imagine it would take a huge amount to get him”

We’re not in the business of signing players and flipping them on after a year. We have loftier ambitions than that.
It’s a sensible business idea for a lot of football clubs who need to financially stabilise themselves in an uncertain market. It’s often the main and only source of substantial revenue for teams.
But with Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers backing, allied to our proud heritage and world status, we won’t be settling for taking the role as ‘feeder club’ for the ‘big boys’.
It’s not inconceivable that Raphinha would look for a move in a year or two’s time if he continues to develop at a rate of knots and we don’t align with his ambitions.
But we haven’t reached that mark yet, and there’s still plenty for him to achieve at Elland Road.
After a top-10 finish in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign following promotion from the Championship, this Leeds side has shown it can go places under Marcelo Bielsa.
We’re expecting the club to go big again in this summer’s transfer market and that means bringing in higher calibre players on Raphinha’s wavelength.
An assault on the European spots could be in the offing, and Raphinha will surely stick around to spearhead it.
