Gladbach needs semi-final spot to help afford Leeds United permanent deal for Max Wober
Borussia Monchengladbach need to clinch a spot in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals to help them sign Max Wober permanently from Leeds United.
That is according to Rheinische Post (page 22, 25 Jan), with the central defender currently on loan at the German club.
Monchengladbach are into the quarter-finals of the competition, where they will take on Saarbrucken early next month.
Permanent move on the cards
If indeed the club’s plan to sign Wober permanently from Leeds depends on their progress into the next stage of the DFB-Pokal, then they should be confident.
Their opponents Saarbrucken currently play in the 3. Liga, the third tier of German football, occupying ninth place in the table.
Wober’s Gladbach meanwhile are currently 12th in the Bundesliga, and should therefore not be too worried about the clash against the minnows.
Saarbrucken will, however, take plenty of confidence from Gladbach’s fixtures before the big cup match, with the latter having to face Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich in their next two games.
They sit first and second respectively in the Bundesliga table, with Wober and his teammates set to be emotionally and physically drained before the meeting with the 3. Liga side.
Wober has been a regular at the back for his temporary club this season, and making the move permanent certainly makes sense for the defender and the German outfit.

It also makes sense for Leeds, with Daniel Farke and Whites fans alike not exactly missing the central defender this season given the club’s displays at the back.
