‘From what I’m hearing out of Leeds…’ – Reliable journo shares update on hunt for creative mid

Leeds United are “highly unlikely” to sign anyone in the January transfer window unless they need to “plug a hole” in the squad, according to David Anderson.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon, the Mirror journalist reported that Marcelo Bielsa is not a fan of the January transfer window and that director of football Victor Orta will use next month to “continue to work on his list of targets, including a creative midfielder, for the summer window”.

Bielsa proved himself right in last two Januarys

Bielsa might not be a fan of signing players in January but he has been forced into action in the winter window in each of his two full seasons at Leeds.

In his first January, Bielsa signed goalkeeper Kiko Casilla amid worrying performances by Bailey Peacock-Farrell. However, Casilla almost single-handedly destroy the Whites’ chances of getting to the play-off final with an awful display against Derby in the semi-finals.

In his second season, Casilla continued to make mistake after mistake and was eventually hit with an eight-match ban for racially abusing Jonathan Leko. How he remains at the club is a mystery to us.

One January signing who is no longer at Leeds is Jean-Kevin Augustin, who was brought in at the start of this year after Eddie Nketiah was recalled from his loan by Arsenal.

Augustin had more injuries than appearances for Leeds and could still come back to haunt the Yorkshire club over the Whites’ failure to sign him permanently at the end of his loan spell from RB Leipzig.

Casilla and Augustin are the only two big first-team signings Leeds have made in January with Bielsa at the helm so we don’t see him signing anyone unless he absolutely has to next month.

It doesn’t mean there won’t be additions though as Mateusz Bogusz, Elia Caprile and Ian Poveda were also signed in January transfer windows to add to the Under-23s.
