Reports linking Leeds United with a move for free agent Francis Coquelin are believed to be wide of the mark, according to Leeds Live.

The outlet reported on its website on Monday (21 October) that the strength of links between the Whites and the former Arsenal star, as well as Christoph Kramer, are believed to be wide of the mark at this time.

Daniel Farke's side are believed to be interested in both Cheikhou Kouyate and Josuha Guilavogui, but talk around a potential move for either Kramer or Coquelin has been "fair quieter" in comparison.

Reports had suggested that Coquelin had been invited for a trial at Thorp Arch [Fabrizio Romano, 18 October] while a deal for Kramer has always appeared to be more unlikely [Yorkshire Evening Post, 5 October].

Are Leeds United close to completing free-agent transfer at Elland Road?

It feels as though the talk around signing a free-agent midfielder has been rumbling on for months already at Elland Road, but slowly and surely it does seem as though the list of potential candidates is being whittled down.

Coquelin would have been an attractive option for Farke given his experience at the top level, but at this moment in time, a deal for the Frenchman feels unlikely to happen unless something major changes quickly.

Perhaps Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell's impressive display against Sheffield United at Elland Road could have given Farke a bit of food for thought.

Although Leeds have little depth behind that midfielder pairing, it is going to be hard to find a free agent who is capable of challenging either of them for their position in the starting XI at this stage of the season.

Perhaps the Whites would be better off going with what they have at their disposal between now and the January transfer window. Ultimately, it shouldn't be too long until a decision is finally made at Thorp Arch.
