Fabrizio Romano shares update on Weston McKennie Leeds United future
Fabrizio Romano believes it will be “really difficult” for Weston McKennie to stay at Leeds United next season if the club are relegated.
The American international moved to Elland Road on loan in the January window with an option to buy should the club stay in the Premier League for next season.
There have been claims both ways about the central midfielder’s future at the club with Juventus keen to offload him, but Romano admitted during his “Here We Go Podcast” (12 May) that McKennie is unlikely to stay at Leeds if they go to the Championship even if he doesn’t have a future at Juventus.
“If Leeds will get relegated, it’s going to be really difficult to see McKennie staying at Leeds,” he said.
“There’s a chance for McKennie to return to Juventus at the end of the season.
“Let’s see the manager situation because if Allegri stays, the feeling is that Juventus will put McKennie again on the market in the summer.
“Otherwise with a new coach, let’s see what’s going to happen. Leeds relegation battle is a crucial point to understand the future of McKennie.”
No surprise
It shouldn’t be a shock to anyone really that McKennie is unlikely to be a Leeds player next season if we get relegated.
He’s an international calibre player who earns huge wages and the club would have no obligation to spend big money on making him a permanent member of the squad.

But the big question should be about whether he should stick around if we stay in the top flight, because he hasn’t been remotely good enough this season since joining the club.
His tackling and energy haven’t been great in midfield and he’s offered little to no goalscoring threat when pushing forward either. He’s just kind of been there, not doing much.
That’s a far bigger situation and decision to make for the new season, but it shouldn’t even be being thought about right now while there are still points to play for and we can save ourselves.
In other Leeds news, Big Sam has reintroduced something to training that Gracia and Marsch axed and the players are loving it.
