Dundee United ready to cash in on Kerr Smith, Leeds United keen on youngster
Dundee United are ready to cash in on defensive sensation Kerr Smith amid interest from Leeds United, according to the Scottish Sun.
The newspaper reports that Crystal Palace, Leicester and Celtic are also keen on the 16-year-old centre-back while Southampton are, as it stands, leading the race for the Scottish youngster.
It is understood that although the Saints have had two bids rejected by Dundee United, it’s still likely that Smith will be sold before the transfer deadline on August 31.
Another youth arrival?
While many fans have been frustrated by the lack of additions to the first-team this summer, Victor Orta has been busy strengthening the team of tomorrow by landing new youngsters.
Lewis Bate, Amari Miller, Kristoffer Klaesson and Sean McGurk are among some of the new faces at Thorp Arch and we could add Smith to that list if Leeds get their way.
Southampton sound as though they are in pole position to sign the impressive young centre-back, who the Scottish Sun describes as “one of Scottish football’s top young talents”.
Smith turns 17 in December and has already played twice for Dundee United’s first-team this season.
He played from the start for the American-owned club in a Scottish League Cup win over Elgin City last month and also played as a substitute versus East Kilbride in the same competition.
Smith made his breakthrough last term just five months after his 16th birthday when he played in the Scottish Premiership against Kilmarnock. Charlie Mulgrew dubbed it “unbelievable” that Smith was training with the first-team at such a tender age [Courier].
He’s so young yet is still playing senior football fairly regularly in Scotland.
Leeds would be playing a blinder by signing such an impressive young talent.
