Duncan Castles: Leeds are plotting move to re-sign Ben White this summer

Leeds United are showing big interest in Brighton defender Ben White this summer, according to The Times journalist Duncan Castles.

Castles made the claim on the latest edition of The Transfer Window [11/06/21], in an update that flies in the face of previous reports, such as that from BBC’s Adam Pope, who cast major doubts over interest on the BBC’s Albion Unlimited show in April.

But Castles said: “There’s a lot of interest in him. I’m told the clubs who are showing the most interest in him are Arsenal, Leeds United, who he played for on loan and tried to sign him last summer, and Leicester City.

“There is also interest from Manchester United and PSG.

“It’s going to be very expensive to do this because Brighton are in a position of strength. They had been talking about a figure of £50million-plus for White.

“I think his England call up has the potential to further increase that asking price.”

Ready to get ourselves hurt again

Just when we thought the White dream was over, it appears to have reared its head again.

We would likely dismiss recent reports such as this, but Castles is a reliable journalist who has amassed a big following on social media through his transfer claims and reports.

But a deal still seems almost impossible for two reasons.

Firstly, any fee around the £50million mark would surely blow us out of the water, and indeed Arsenal and Leicester City. Manchester United and PSG are surely the only two interested parties who could stump that sort of cash up.

Secondly, central defence is not an area where we are desperate to improve.

Diego Llorente and Robin Koch were signed last summer with big reputations, and both are set to line up for big international sides at Euro 2020 this summer, for Spain and Germany, respectively.

Pascal Struijk has also shown immense promise and already looks like an established Premier League player, while there is also the Whites captain, Liam Cooper, battling for a spot in defence.

Blowing a huge chunk of our budget on White seems like a big risk, so we’re still putting this is in the highly unlikely category.
