Done deal: Alfie McCalmont quits Leeds United for good as exit confirmed

Leeds United have announced the sale of academy graduate Alfie McCalmont to Carlisle United for an undisclosed fee, as confirmed by the club.

The 23-year-old central midfielder made no senior league appearances for Leeds, but completed three successful loan spells with Oldham Athletic and Morecambe.

His successful loan spell with Carlisle last season, with two goals in 16 appearances, helped the Cumbrian side to a playoff victory to secure their place in League One.

Shining in the lower leagues

McCalmont never had the chance to prove himself at the top level with Leeds. However, he was able to show his quality League Two and prove he could make a difference to lower league sides.

He showed his worth at Carlisle last season as he helped the side get to the League 2 playoff final at Wembley.

“Getting to Wembley is something that doesn’t happen often and something we worked hard for,” McCalmont told The Oldham Times.

“When I signed here, the aim was to get promoted, and to do it at Wembley is even more special. I am over the moon.”

The youngster is now set to shine in League One again after previously playing in England’s third tier with Morecambe in 2021/22.

For Leeds United, this represents some good business. While the fee is undisclosed, Transfermarkt value the Northern Ireland international at just under £129,000.

For a player who would be unlikely to get any minutes for Leeds, even in the second division, this tidy profit may help to fund other signings.

Leeds sent McCalmont a fond farewell, but their priorities currently lie elsewhere as they prepare for their return to the Championship.
