Diego Llorente transfer decision made as Leeds United news emerges

Leeds United defender Diego Llorente’s future is “in limbo” after Roma’s interest in signing him permanently diminished, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Mirror reported in their print edition (19 June, page 47) that the Serie A side had “cooled” their attempts to bring the wantaway Whites defender back to Rome after two loan spells.

Llorente first headed to the Italian capital in January 2023 prior to the Peacocks’ relegation from the Premier League, and remained at Roma for the entirety of last season alongside Rasmus Kristensen.

While Kristensen was expected to return to Elland Road with Llorente staying put at the Stadio Olimpico, the Mirror’s latest update suggests that both could be on their way back to West Yorkshire instead.

Diego Llorente transfer update is huge setback for Leeds United

Leeds had hoped to usher several of last season’s loanees out the door this summer, with Llorente appearing to be one of the players most likely to depart following a relatively successful spell in Rome [Gianluca DiMarzio].

It was certainly more successful than Kristensen’s time in the Italian capital, with Roma reportedly making it clear that there was no chance Daniele De Rossi would welcome the Dane back next season [Corriere dello Sport].

A “gentleman’s agreement” had even been agreed for the permanent transfer of Llorente for a nominal fee this summer, but it remains to be seen whether Roma will be held to it following the latest update [Roma News].

Selling players not in the plans of Daniel Farke looked set to be one way for the Whites to alleviate the financial pressures brought about by spending a second consecutive season in the Championship, and they’ll be hoping that Roma re-ignite their interest in signing Llorente on a permanent deal this summer.
