Daniel James would rather stay at Leeds United amid late exit speculation as Cody Gakpo fires in PSV hat-trick

Daniel James’ preference is to stay at Leeds United amid late summer interest from Tottenham, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday (31 August), Hay reported that while James, 24, would rather stay in West Yorkshire, Leeds haven’t closed the door on selling him in the way they did when Jack Harrison was linked with an exit.

Hay’s added that James’ situation at Elland Road is “one to watch as Leeds go after” PSV forward Cody Gakpo.

Just before Hay tweeted that, 23-year-old Gakpo rounded off a hat-trick as PSV beat Volendam with ease in the Eredivisie at the Philips Stadion.

On fire

We don’t care whether James goes for nothing on deadline day, signing Gakpo is an absolute no brainer.

The boy is on fire in the Netherlands and after scoring his hat-trick against Volendam, he’s now scored seven goals in nine appearances across all competitions this season for PSV.

Last month, Gakpo scored once and supplied two assists to help PSV beat Ajax in the Dutch Super Cup while last term he played a massive role in his side’s second-placed finish in the league and their qualification to the Champions League.

Unfortunately got Gakpo, PSV were knocked out of the play-offs by Rangers and are set for a spot in the Europa League group stages this season.

PSV’s failure to make the Champions League group stages should be a good thing for Leeds because playing in the Premier League is far more of a lure than playing in the Netherlands and in the Europa League on Thursday nights for a player who’s been there and done it before.

After Gakpo’s hat-trick against Volendam, he was substituted off on the hour mark to rapturous applause by PSV fans.

Was that his parting gift to the Eindhoven faithful?
