Daniel Farke shares Georginio Rutter exit update at Leeds United
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has shared an update on Georginio Rutter’s future amid speculation linking him with a transfer to Brighton.
The Premier League club reportedly activated a £40million release clause in his contract [David Ornstein, 14 August] and he is understood to have accepted a move to the South Coast [Florian Plettenberg, 15 August].
While no transfer has been confirmed by either club at this stage, Farke discussed the situation ahead of the Whites’ Championship clash with West Brom on Saturday (17 August).
Speaking in a press conference on Thursday (15 August) he said: “I expect he will leave. It’s not in our hands anymore.
“He asked to sleep on it overnight and wanted to help us. This morning was emotional. He has more or less said goodbye.”
Will Georginio Rutter exit Leeds United amid Brighton transfer rumours?
While Leeds United supporters would have been expecting the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray to potentially leave this summer, few fans would have anticipated Rutter’s exit after recent updates out of Elland Road.
There has been this unwavering belief following relegation from the Championship that not only was the Frenchman happy in Yorkshire, but Leeds were unlikely to earn a fee that made it worth selling him.
But in the space of the last 24 hours, that situation has completely flipped on its head. Supporters will be frustrated and while the release clause has taken the decision out of their hands, it feels as though they should have found a way to stop it.
To lose arguably your three best players in the space of a couple of months after the playoff defeat is totally unacceptable when you’re supposedly plotting a new promotion push this term.
The 49ers are going to have to get their chequebook out in the final weeks of the transfer window if they want to get the fans on their side for the remainder of the season.
