Connor Roberts transfer update emerges at Leeds United as summer Burnley exit mooted

Nothing is imminent for Burnley defender Connor Roberts to return to Leeds United this summer, according to Graham Smyth.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported via the Inside Elland Road podcast (9 July, 36:05) that sources close to both the club and the player suggest a return to Elland Road is not immediately on the cards.

Although the Whites are reportedly keen to bring the Welsh international back to Yorkshire [The Athletic, 13 June] new Clarets manager Scott Parker is expected to assess his squad before sanctioning any departures.

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, Smyth said: “Having spoken to a couple of people close to the club and close to the player it doesn’t sound like anything is imminent right now.

“You have to caveat everything in the transfer window with subject to change because who knows what Scott Parker might decide. As it stands right now, there is nothing imminent for Connor Roberts at Leeds United.”

Will Leeds United re-sign Connor Roberts amid Burnley exit speculation?

While several Leeds supporters are eager to see Roberts return to Elland Road this summer, the Whites will take their time before pushing to secure the Welshman’s signature as they assess the current state of the market.

Although the defender was a popular figure during his brief stint with the Whites, he never managed to truly displace Archie Gray at right back. Daniel Farke may well believe there is a better option to succeed the teenager.

A lot will also depend on what Burnley plan to do this summer. If they want Roberts gone, their asking price for his signature could be reduced but if Parker intends to start him, it will be a much more expensive deal to get over the line.

As Smyth suggested, things can change very quickly during the transfer window so a summer move cannot be ruled out. This could be one to watch in the coming weeks as Championship clubs step up their pre-season preparations.
