Connor Roberts stance on Leeds United return mooted as Burnley backed to sanction exit

Graham Smyth has admitted that he thinks Burnley would “jump” at selling Connor Roberts to Leeds United for a modest fee this summer.

The Welsh international spent the second half of the Championship season on loan with Daniel Farke’s side at Elland Road, impressing as the Whites narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Premier League.

Reports have suggested Leeds are keen to re-sign the 28-year-old [The Athletic, 13 June] and Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Smyth believes that both Roberts and Burnley would be willing to get a deal done.

Writing on X on Friday (5 July) Smyth said: “Dare say he’d absolutely jump at it. Also think Burnley would jump at it if offered even a modest sum.

“They’re well covered there now. He’d be a solid option, but a priority? Jury’s out.”

Will Connor Roberts return to Leeds United and exit Burnley in the summer transfer window?

Leeds United could do with a new right back through the door this summer, particularly after Archie Gray’s big-money summer move to Tottenham was confirmed earlier in the transfer window.

The teenager may have been a midfielder by trade but he played a large majority of last season on the right side of Daniel Farke’s backline and actually very rarely got to feature in his preferred position in the Championship.

Sam Byram has agreed on a new deal at Elland Road and while he will be expected to remain in post throughout the summer transfer window, he has repeatedly struggled with injury issues throughout his career.

Roberts seemed to be an instant hit in the changing room and quickly won over the fanbase following his arrival in January which would appear to make him the ideal fit to slot in this summer, especially if Burnley are willing to sell.

Whether or not Leeds will be willing to match their Championship rival’s asking price remains to be seen, but with Roberts’ experience of winning this division, this feels like a deal worth spending a modest sum of money for this summer.
