Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini has confirmed that Nahitan Nandez is not going anywhere amid links with Leeds United and Napoli.
Diario Registrado reported last month that Marcelo Bielsa is keen to sign the 24-year-old midfielder as he aimed to strengthen his team for life in the Premier League.
Napoli have also been linked with Nandez with Gazzetta Dello Sport claiming that the Serie A giants are eyeing up the Uruguay international while Cagliari are interested in Adam Ounas.
But Giulini has rubbished rumours of Nandez’s exit as he was quoted by Football Italia as saying: “I can deny the stories that Nahitan Nandez could go to Napoli in exchange for Adam Ounas. Nandez is staying with us, we haven’t offered him to anyone.”
We never really expected Leeds to sign Nandez.
Links between the former Boca Juniors midfielder and the Whites have been – at best – tentative and the Yorkshire giants seem keener on Rodrigo De Paul to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, speaking to the Totally Football podcast, has spoken about Udinese and Argentina midfielder: “The links to Rodrigo De Paul are very real and very strong.
“It hasn’t really moved forward since it broke a couple of weeks ago and Leeds said privately after the signing of [Robin] Koch from Freiburg that they would likely sit still until after the season started.
“They will try to do a winger, they will try to get a number 10 in the De Paul mould.”
Nandez is neither a winger or a number 10 – although he is versatile.
He played a lot as a right-sided wing-back or on the right-hand side of the central midfield area.
Nandez is versatile – but not versatile in the way that Bielsa would want him because he doesn’t play in that central attacking role like De Paul and doesn’t play on both wings or centrally like another target, Ryan Kent.
In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has shared an update on Leeds’ transfers.
