Club Brugge want Pascal Struijk as Leeds United exit development emerges

Belgian side Club Brugge are in the hunt to sign Pascal Struijk from Leeds United, according to De Telegraaf.

The Dutch newspaper reported on Friday (28 July) that while the fee is unknown, Club Brugge see Struijk as a top candidate to be a defensive leader for the club and hopes Leeds’ relegation will boost their chances of securing his signature, despite having four more years remaining on his contract.

The 23-year-old came through the Leeds academy after joining from Ajax but could be the latest in an exodus of Elland Road departures following relegation.

Struijk was a regular in Leeds’ defence last season, making 29 Premier League appearances and even scoring twice. However, he was part of the fallible defence that eventually saw Leeds relegated, so may relish the chance to revive his career in the Belgian Pro League.

He has featured for Leeds in their pre-season efforts this summer, including a substitute appearance on Thursday (27 July) in the Whites’ 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, so Daniel Farke may have had him in his plans heading into next season

However, the temptation to ditch the English second division and join a top-flight side that looks likely to qualify for the Europa League group stages may see Strujk depart.

A return to his native country may be beneficial too, but despite Leeds’ poor season, his stats show that he would be a valuable asset in the Championship.

Defensively, Struijk is dependable. he is dominant in the air, with 2.45 aerial duels won per 90 (98th percentile) while he tackles at a rate of 3.44 per 90 (98th percentile) [FBRef].

He also is adept at making dangerous passes to help instigate attacks, with 4.87 progressive passes per 90 (80th percentile). This detail may show why Farke would want him as he is a steadfast defender but also can contribute to Fakre’s desired style.

He would be a loss to Leeds should he depart, but with the likes of Ethan Ampadu coming into the club perhaps an injection of cash may benefit the club more as they continue their rebuild under Farke.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites “close the door” on the departure of their Everton-linked Italian international striker.
