Club abandons talks to sign Leeds player due to financial reasons – reports

Doncaster Rovers handed ended their interest in Leeds United midfielder Robbie Gotts due to financial reasons, according to the Mirror.

Football Insider reported last week that Doncaster, Swindon and Huddersfield had all held talks about signing the 20-year-old on loan.

However, Mirror journalist David Anderson now claims that Doncaster’s financial situation means they have no choice but to abandon their talks to sign the young Leeds player, who can play in the midfield or at right-back.

In August, the Doncaster Free Press reported that the Keepmoat club, managed by Darren Moore, have suffered a “catastrophic” hit on their revenue streams due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s unlikely that it would have cost Donny much to sign Gotts on loan for Leeds, especially as a temporary deal between the two Yorkshire clubs would have been beneficial for both parties in both the short and long-term.

But it’s a shame that COVID-19 has had such a drastic effect on the finances of football clubs in the lower tiers of the English game.

Gotts is likely to find himself a new, albeit temporary, home before the 5pm transfer deadline passes on Friday as he’s been linked with a loan move away from Elland Road ever since the end of last season.

As Football Insider said, Huddersfield and Swindon remain in the hunt to sign the Leeds academy product.

Huddersfield seems a likely home for Gotts considering the fact they are managed by ex-Leeds Under-23s manager Carlos Corberan but a League One club like Swindon might be able to offer the midfielder more game-time.

It’s a big decision for Gotts but we’re sure he and the club will make the right one.

In other Leeds United news, fans have been reacting to news this player is reportedly in advanced talks to quit Elland Road.
