Chris Wilder slams Leeds United over Gustavo Hamer as Sheffield United balk at derisory bid
Sheffield United found Leeds United’s transfer offer for Gustavo Hamer “derisory” and rejected it, according to The Star.
The paper’s website reported on 26 August that the Dutchman was subject of a £13million bid from Elland Road, which was the offer referred to by manager Chris Wilder when he publicly claimed one had come in that was a “million miles away” from being successful.
The manager had slammed the bid earlier the same day while revealing that there had also been a rival offer which was not far off.
Hamer was named the Blades’ Player of the Season as they were relegated from the Premier League, after making a big-money move from Coventry City last summer.
Leeds United tried to sign Gustavo Hamer from Coventry too
It might be a bit far to describe a £13million bid between two Championship sides as “derisory” but it probably was optimistic.
A deal has been done between the two sides for Jayden Bogle already this summer but they are still local rivals, and Hamer is arguably the Blades’ best player.
Having reportedly cost £15million a year ago [The Athletic] it is unlikely that an offer of less than that was ever going to be successful, but as a starting point for negotiations it might not be so outrageous.
The problem is there is precious little time to advance through a series of back and forth discussions when the transfer deadline is at the end of the week (30 August) and the Whites are playing catch-up after seemingly being unprepared to lose star players.

Leeds United wanted Hamer a year ago before Sheffield United took him to the Premier League [Dean Jones] and he could fill the gap in midfield left by Glen Kamara while also replacing the attacking output of Georginio Rutter thanks to his goals and assists record.
But it doesn’t look like the pursuit has got off to a good start this summer, and it remains to be seen whether it has already come to a complete halt.
