Chris Sutton snaps back, demands Leeds answer after Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer claim

Chris Sutton wonders why Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined Leeds United in the summer transfer window if he had offers from abroad.

The striker moved to the Whites as a free agent after his Everton contract expired at the end of last season.

Calvert-Lewin made history against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on 20 December, being the first player to score in five consecutive games for the West Yorkshire outfit since Mark Viduka in 2003.

The Elland Road faithful are now confident about avoiding relegation under Daniel Farke, and the England international is capable of firing them to safety.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin wants to prove himself at Leeds United

Calvert-Lewin may have been tempted by Leeds’ wage package and his desire to succeed in the Premier League to snub a move abroad, Rory Smith says.

After a slow start to the centre-forward’s career at Elland Road, he’s slowly starting to show why the Whites gambled on him.

The English striker’s Premier League experience is on show as he reignites his reputation at the West Yorkshire outfit.

Speaking on the Monday Night Club on 22 December, when Smith said the attacker had offers from Italy and France, Sutton snapped back: “Don’t just throw that. Where? Why did he go to Leeds then?”

The Observer journalist responded: “I don’t know why he went to Leeds, but my guess is, it’s some combination of the amount they wanted to pay him and a desire to prove that he could still do it in the Premier League.”

Calvert-Lewin’s form will surely have caught the eyes of Thomas Tuchel, and the Englishman’s dream of playing in the 2026 World Cup may yet be alive.

Daniel Farke demands more from Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Farke will surely want to see Calvert-Lewin remain consistent, with the Whites still not out of danger.

Relegation is a realistic scenario for Leeds, and while they have opened up a six-point gap with West Ham United for now, things can change in a matter of weeks in the Premier League.

Speaking after beating Palace 4-1, Farke said: “Right now, he’s on a path to be a top-class player for Leeds and also a Leeds hero. But you know my attitude — I don’t like to speak about quality and top-class players just after a few weeks or a good couple of months.”

While the former Everton star is arguably in his best vein of form, what matters at the end of the day is whether he can continue to perform week in, week out for the West Yorkshire outfit until the end of the season.
