Chelsea may try to sign Tyler Adams without paying release clause to Leeds United – Ben Jacobs
Chelsea could try to sign Tyler Adams from Leeds without paying his £20m release clause this week, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Writing on his personal Twitter account (8 August), the journalist reports that the London club are happy to proceed with a deal for the USMNT captain and the player is open to the move.
But despite having a straightforward £20m clause in his deal that makes an exit easy, Chelsea are considering trying to negotiate a different payment structure with the Whites to get a deal done before the new Premier League season begins this week.
“Chelsea happy to proceed with Tyler Adams, who is open to the move,” he wrote.
“More now a decision as to whether they pay the £20m release clause or try for a different structure.”
Pay up or go away
Adams is obviously one of the better players we have at Elland Road right now, and while he is currently injured there is no doubting his importance to the team once fit again.
The £20m clause means that we have very little power in negotiations should a team decide to pay up and he wants to move, but if people want to try and negotiate then Leeds’ stance should be really clear.

The only way that anything other than the release clause should be accepted is if we’re going to be guaranteed a larger sum of money for the player – even if it means we may have to wait a little bit longer.
Usually release clauses need to be paid up front, but if Chelsea were to come in with a deal that way less than that initially but totalled £30m then it would certainly be something to consider.
Anything less than or equal to the release clause amount would make no sense as we would be losing in every aspect of the deal, so the board shouldn’t find it too hard should these talks take place between Leeds and Chelsea.
