Chelsea and Leeds United in talks over loan-to-buy deal for Tyler Adams, could remove release clause
Chelsea and Leeds are in talks about a loan-to-buy deal for Tyler Adams this summer which could see his release clause removed, according to Simon Phillips.
Writing on his official Substack account (8 August), the journalist reports that talks are ongoing for a deal between the clubs with a permanent option not yet ruled out either.
Todd Boehly is said to have a good relationship with Leeds’ new owners the 49ers Enterprises and that could see the clubs come to an agreement that doesn’t see the £20m release clause paid, and it could potentially be removed to see a loan deal go through.

“Chelsea are in talks with Leeds United to sign midfielder Tyler Adams, with us having confirmation yesterday that talks had started,” he wrote.
“As of yesterday, personal terms had not yet been agreed with Adams, but they are not expected to be a problem and the player is keen on the move.
“Chelsea owners have good relations with Leeds United owners and Todd Boehly is also acquainted with Adams’ family and agents.
“Adams has a relegation release clause that is believed to be around £20m. Any club can trigger that now if they paid it up front. Chelsea’s talks are currently centered around paying it in installments.
“As well as this, I understand a loan with an option to buy proposal is also being spoken about.
“This could work well for everyone. The option to buy would be slightly above the release clause meaning Leeds get more money for Adams at the end of the loan as well as a small loan fee, but Chelsea will have a season to look at him and make sure he’s a good fit/does well.
“This would mean that Leeds and Adams agree to remove his release clause option, and he signs on loan with Chelsea.”

Wow
This could be a bit of a masterstroke from the club if it means that we’re not committed to accepting a lower transfer fee and could potentially even get him back.
The £20m release clause currently means that we don’t really have any power at the negotiating table for him right now, but if clubs want to open talks then we’re well within our rights to tell them what we want.
Chelsea have spent a lot of money in the last 12 months and a loan deal could potentially help them with their FFP, while it also helps Adams get top level football rather than playing in the Championship and any buy-option could greater reflect his true value.
It would also mean that if we get back to the Premier League for next season that there is the potential of bringing back into the fold rather than losing him and having to find a replacement.
It could be something that works out best for everyone, and it would also take up the final loan spot that we can allow for someone to leave meaning it’s cash or nothing for anyone else.
