Championship club table bid to sign Leeds United defender Niall Huggins

An unnamed Championship club have made an offer to sign Leeds United full-back Niall Huggins, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Huggins, 20, was included in nine Premier League squads last season and starred for Mark Jackson’s Under-23 side that romped home to the Premier League 2 (Division 2) title.

However, YEP journalist Graham Smyth claims Leeds have decided this summer to let him leave on loan for the 2021/22 campaign, while a permanent exit, under the right terms, could also be sanctioned.

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s report claims a bid has been made by a Championship club, thought the identity of said side has not been disclosed, while Blackburn Rovers’ well-documented interest has been confirmed by Smyth.

Huggins’ Elland Road exit this summer is said to be “almost inevitable”.

Year-long loan?

Huggins is a player that has impressed after rising through the ranks at Leeds, leading Marcelo Bielsa to hand him his debut in February against Arsenal.

It was a tough start to life in senior football as the Whites were defeated 4-2 in north London.

However, he doesn’t turn 21 until December and that cameo at the Emirates Stadium remains his only outing. Surely he deserves a season-long loan to, perhaps, a Championship club?

The Wales Under-21 international only signed a new contract last year to tie him to the club until 2023.

Maybe the club are just looking long-term and want to receive as much money as possible now with his value likely to plummet next year as his contract runs down.

But it would be good to see him develop out on loan in the EFL for a season in order to prove himself.
