Burnley to take £200m risk that could see Leeds United strike free transfer
Burnley could keep Leeds United target Josh Brownhill until the end of the season to help them earn promotion, according to Carlton Palmer.
The midfielder could sign a pre-contract agreement away from Turf Moor in January as the Clarets struggle to tie him down to a new deal [TBR Football].
The Whites have shown an interest in signing the 28-year-old with Scott Parker’s side set to decide whether to cash in on their skipper or risk losing him for free.
Speaking to Football League World on 21 November, Palmer believes Brownhill could help Burnley to earn promotion which would be more financially beneficial than a January sale.
He said: “Burnley have two choices, they can let the contract run down and get promotion and worry about it later, or cash in in the January transfer window, with the likes of Rangers, West Ham, Celtic, even Leeds United [interested].
“At the end of the day, this is the last chance you’re going to get any money for him, what is he worth? I don’t know, at 28 years of age, I don’t know how much money they could actually generate for him, with his contract out at the end of the season.
“Maybe £1.5 to 2 million, and maybe Burnley might think ‘You know what, we’ll keep him until the end of the season, if we get promoted we might end up with nearly £200 million’.”
Burnley could take risk on Leeds United target Josh Brownhill
Daniel Farke has spent a fair portion of this season with arguably his two best midfielders in Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev through injury.
Their absence hasn’t necessarily had a negative impact on the side with Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka deputising to a high level.
Josuha Guilavogui has also come in to provide competition and a defensive option for the Whites in the short term.
Despite the quality available in the middle of the park at Elland Road, there is a general lack of Championship experience which could prove to be damaging as the season goes on.
Brownhill would certainly represent a coup for Leeds given that he could come in on a cut-price deal or even on a free in the summer.

The ex-Bristol City man has plenty of experience in the second tier and in the Premier League while also having an eye for goal.
Having the 28-year-old making late runs into the box and chipping in with goals could hand a boost towards promotion this campaign if he joins in January.
