Bristol City star Nahki Wells makes Leeds United transfer admission ahead of Ashton Gate clash

Bristol City striker Nahki Wells has admitted he would have “jumped at the chance” to play for Leeds United.

Daniel Farke’s side face Wells and the rest of Liam Manning’s Bristol City side at Ashton Gate on Saturday (26 October) as they look to close the gap to Sunderland at the top of the Championship table.

While Wells is not a popular figure among Whites supporters, the Bermudian international insists he never turned down a move to Elland Road even admitting he’d have loved to play for the club.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Post on Saturday (26 October) he said: “I’ve always had it really bad with Leeds fans and the way they target me.

“Last time I was at Elland Road I injured my ankle, hobbled round the pitch and Leeds fans tore into me. But I can see why they give me a hard time. There’s the Bradford connection, a Huddersfield link, and false rumours I’d turned down Leeds.

“It seemed I’d chosen Huddersfield over Leeds when leaving Bradford which didn’t go down too well but if only they knew the truth. I didn’t even have the option to snub Leeds and this has been my little secret but I’d actually have jumped at the chance to play for them.

“When I first came to England I lived in Leeds as a student at Thomas Danby College and went to a game at Elland Road where I was bowled over by the place.

“I’ve never said this before and I ain’t gonna lie, the first impressions really hit me hard and I sat there thinking I’d really love to play for this club.

“They were League One at the time and living in the city, seeing their players out and about, I felt envious. I badly wanted to play for Leeds but it wasn’t to be.”

Why do Leeds United fans hate Bristol City striker Nahki Wells?

Wells’ opportunity to make a splash at Elland Road has probably been and gone. Although the forward is in good form ahead of the clash with Farke’s side, the 34-year-old is in the twilight of his career.

Undoubtedly, during Leeds’ time in League One, Wells would have been an excellent addition to the ranks at Elland Road as his record in the lower leagues of the EFL is nothing short of exceptional.

The Whites won’t be worrying about missed opportunities in the past when they make the trip to Ashton Gate on Saturday however. Farke and his side will know this is a game they almost have to win if they want to establish themselves as title contenders.

Hopefully, Leeds will be boosted by the free-agent signing of Josuha Guilavogui and manage to cope without the injured Largie Ramazani to find a way to secure all three points to move level with Sunderland, even if only for a few hours.
