Blackburn Rovers negotiate Joe Gelhardt loan move in Leeds United transfer update

Blackburn Rovers are looking to agree on a financial package with Leeds United for the potential loan of Joe Gelhardt, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

The 20-year-old has struggled for game time at Elland Road this season, making just 14 appearances and amassing a total of 188 minutes in the Premier League.

After bursting onto the scene last term and scoring several crucial goals in the Whites’ relegation run-in, he has fallen frustratingly down the pecking this season, with Rodrigo, Willy Gnonto and Patrick Bamford all preferred in attack.

The Lancashire Telegraph revealed that talks were ongoing between Rovers and Jesse Marsch’s side for the striker’s services, but the finances of the deal were yet to be brokered.

The report said: “Gelhardt is one live target that Rovers are looking to bring in as talks remain ongoing.

“Much of that will focus on a financial package that his parent club will agree to before sanctioning his release.

“The expectation is that Gelhardt will feature for Leeds in their FA Cup third-round replay with Cardiff City on Wednesday night.”

Minutes needed

Despite showing signs of promise in the relegation dogfight last campaign, occupying a place on the bench every week till the end of the season won’t do Gelhardt’s development any good whatsoever.

The arrival of club record signing Geoginio Rutter will likely push the young striker even further down Marsch’s plans if he were to stay, so a loan move makes sense for all parties.

Gelhardt need only look at the likes of Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer to see how a fruitful spell in the Championship can reignite a striker’s career. A 10-goal second half to the season would definitely leave his American manager with a tricky selection dilemma, come the start of the 2023/24 season.

With Blackburn stalking promotion to the Premier League and alongside talisman Ben Brereton Diaz, Gelhardt could learn a great deal from a loan spell at Ewood Park.

For the moment, though, the Whites forward will hope he can impress in the club’s FA Cup third-round replay against Cardiff City on Wednesday (18 January).

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have placed a £2.2m a year contract offer on the table for this World Cup star.
