Birmingham make ‘Surprise’ move to sign Ian Poveda in Leeds United transfer news

Birmingham City have made a “surprise” late bid to sign Ian Poveda on loan from Leeds United before the transfer deadline, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist reported via his Patreon on 1 February that Birmingham boss Tony Mowbray is the one behind the move, and is a fan of Poveda after he had him on loan at Blackburn Rovers.

Birmingham, who are owned by American-based investment service Knighthead Capital Management, are now looking to get the deal for Poveda over the line before 11 pm tonight.

He isn’t needed at Elland Road

Poveda has fallen far down the pecking order at Elland Road, to the point where he is no longer needed even as a depth option by Daniel Farke, and therefore the door has been opened for him to depart before the window closes.

Cyrcensio Summerville and Daniel James have cemented their positions as the starting wingers under Farke’s leadership, with Wilfried Gnonto and Jaidon Anthony providing backup, and below them is Poveda who has rarely been called upon this season.

The winger has made just seven appearances in the Championship so far this season, with only one of those coming from the start, while in a short loan spell under Mowbray at Blackburn he made ten appearances for the club.

The opportunity to go and play in the Championship, with a manager who already knows him well and will be able to bring the best out of his game, should not be turned down by Leeds or Poveda.
