Ben Godfrey decides on Leeds United transfer amid Everton financial plight

Everton defender Ben Godfrey is ready to snub a move to Leeds United this month and move abroad instead, according to the Daily Mail.

Writing on their website (24 January), the Whites were interested in a loan deal for the versatile defender who has found himself out of the picture at Goodison Park.

But amid interest from Serie A club Genoa, a move abroad now looks far more likely with Godfrey open to the move which leaves Daniel Farke continuing to look for defensive reinforcements before the window closes.

Shame

Farke would know Godfrey better than most managers in football having been the manager at Norwich during his big breakthrough.

Godfrey is capable of playing at right-back, centre-back, left-back or even in midfield if necessary and that would really help Leeds in the situation they’re currently in.

Djed Spence and Luke Ayling have been allowed to move on and the chances are that Charlie Cresswell will head out of the exit door too before the deadline passes, meaning the squad would be three short in defence.

Godfrey would bring experience and quality to the squad but also versatility and a loan would’ve been perfect, but Everton’s financial problems mean they’d rather sell and we can’t compete financially with top-flight clubs right now.

It’s a real shame because he would’ve been a fantastic addition, but at leas the club weren’t led down a garden path and then ditched late on so they can move on to alternative targets now.
