BBC pundit names five players who could leave Leeds United after playoff final defeat
Jon Newsome has named five Leeds United players he expects to leave the club this summer after their playoff final defeat against Southampton at Wembley on Sunday (26 May).
Adam Armstrong’s 24th-minute strike settled the showpiece contest between the two and condemned Leeds to another season in the Championship.
As a result, a number of Whites stars could depart and Newsome has picked out five players he does not expect to see at Elland Road next term.
Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds (26 May), he said: “Crysencio Summerville, yes, I can see him on his way. Willy Gnonto, yeah, I could see him on his way. Dan James, frustrated, not even playing, on the bench.
“Joe Rodon goes back. Ethan Ampadu, who has been great all season [could go].”
Leeds United are set for a turbulent summer transfer window
Defeat in the playoff final could have far-reaching consequences for Leeds both this summer and next season.
Without the cash injection that comes with earning promotion to the Premier League, Leeds are now likely to be forced to sell a number of players to balance their books.
Attacking stars like Summerville, Gnonto and James could be prime candidates in the shop window, while impressive on-loan performers like Rodon may not be affordable on permanent deals.
Head coach Daniel Farke may find himself working with a significantly depleted squad next season if a raft of high quality players are moved on or not retained – making his task of earning promotion in 2024/25 a much harder one.
The Whites will particularly rue their poor six-game run at the end of the season that cost them a top-two finish and automatic promotion with it, consigning them to the lottery of the playoffs.

Leeds will be hopeful that Farke can go one better next term even after what is set to be a turbulent summer at Elland Road.
In other Leeds United news, Newsome has slammed what happened to Crysencio Summerville against Southampton, calling it “pathetic”.
