Barcelona in hunt to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier

Leeds United ace Illan Meslier is among the goalkeepers who Barcelona are looking at signing this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish news outlet reports that Fiorentina’s Bartlomiej Dragowski, Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou and Bono, Genk’s Maarten Vandevoordt (Genk) and Alban Lafont of Nantes are also on Barca’s radar.

It is understood that Barcelona are not looking to replace their current “untouchable” goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen but they do have concerns about his injury record and want some good competition for him.

No way this happens

Look, we can understand why Barcelona would take an interest in Meslier.

He’s only 21-year-olds and already has a lot of senior experience to his name by making 72 first-team appearances for Leeds, of which 57 have come in the Premier League.

He’s played every minute of every game for the Whites and the France Under-21s this season, meaning that he’s going to keep on getting better and better. In March last year, he was dubbed “phenomenal” by Sky Sports pundit Rob Green [YEP].

Yes, Meslier has made mistakes and yes, this site has been critical of the young goalkeeper at times because some of the mistakes he makes are repeated ones.

However, he’s only 21-years-old and as goalkeepers usually peak in their 30s, there’s a good chance the Leeds number one can be one of the best in the world in the future.

Barcelona’s interest is understandable and the Nou Camp giants will no doubt be able to turn the head of a young player in West Yorkshire.

However, why would he leave a number one spot at Elland Road to sit on the bench at Barca and wait around for ter Stegen to get injured?

Leeds might want to offer Meslier a new deal in order to fend off interest from Barca, plus any other club who might want to sign him.

And while he played well on Wednesday night at Aston Villa, Rodrigo is also wanted by Barcelona [Mundo Deportivo]. We’d rather he went due to the age of him and Meslier.

If they come in for Meslier, maybe it’ll be best to see if they’d be more interested in Rodrigo instead.

Barca have also been linked with Raphinha this season. Let’s hope they divert the gaze of their prying eyes elsewhere soon.

In other Leeds United news, two players could be axed for the trip to Everton on Saturday after what Phil Hay reported this week.
