Bamford transfer: ‘Massive’ Sky Sports update on exit-linked Leeds star

Patrick Bamford is on “massive wages” at Leeds United which could scupper a move to Wrexham despite the League One club’s ambition, according to Clinton Morrison.

The pundit, live on Sky Sports Soccer Special [1 January, 14:55], discussed the potential of Bamford making the drop down to the revolutionised League One outfit, chasing a third-straight promotion.

Bamford, 31, has not started a single Championship game for Daniel Farke’s side this season and has been heavily linked with a January exit.

“I’ve even seen [Wrexham] linked to Patrick Bamford,” Morrison commented, as the reports emerged [Ben Jacobs, 27 December].

“That’s how ambitious they’re trying to be at the moment at Wrexham. Will they get Patrick Bamford? I’m not sure if he’ll want to drop down to that level and he’s on massive wages at Leeds.

“But that’s what they’re going for at the moment, that’s the window they’re shopping in.”

Patrick Bamford to leave Leeds United for Wrexham?

Bamford was once an unstoppable frontman at Leeds at Premier League level, but it appears now the club’s new ambitions are passing him by.

The once-England international, who reportedly earns £30,000-a-week in wages [Football League Paper]., has been a passenger for much of Farke’s reign, firstly due to injury absences and more recently through mere lack of selection.

Bamford’s current contract – even despite the strongly discussed wage slash after relegation – is comfortably the most lucrative he will receive for the rest of his career.

However, if he is willing to rekindle his career on the pitch in League One, a switch to Wrexham could replicate at least a portion of that salary; they and Birmingham City are by far the third tier’s biggest spenders.

The Red Dragons are also widely expected to challenge for a third successive shift up the divisions in as many seasons, aiming to go from the National League to the Championship within a record timeframe.
