Athletic journalist responds when asked if Leeds will sign 26y/o PL defender on loan

The Athletic’s Sam Lee has suggested Leeds United won’t be signing Benjamin Mendy on loan from Manchester City this month.

Mendy, 26, is being investigated by Man City after the left-back was caught hosting a party on New Year’s Eve. Lee has reported the Frenchman “keeps getting himself into serious trouble” and claims it could be “time for a change” for him.

Lee, The Athletic’s Man City correspondent was then asked whether it’s likely that Mendy will head to Leeds on loan for the rest of the season with his former Marseille manager Marcelo Bielsa in charge at Elland Road.

However, Lee suggested via his personal Twitter account on Sunday that’s unlikely to happen by saying: “Not entirely sure Leeds would be happy with that.”

Mendy an absolute no-go

Mendy has shown flashes of brilliance at Man City but the ex-Marseille left-back has been hit hard by injuries in recent years and this latest indiscretion is absolutely bewildering.

He needs to get himself back to the player that led to Man City buying him but doing something like this is shocking in so many senses.

Man City’s clash with Everton was postponed a few days before Mendy hosted the party due to an outbreak of COVID-19 cases at the big-six club.

We doubt Pep Guardiola will want to keep Mendy and we doubt that Leeds will want him either.

And if they did want him, a loan deal is an absolute no-go because of loan rules in the Premier League.

Jack Harrison is on loan at Elland Road from the Citizens and Premier League clubs cannot have more than one loanee from one club at one time.

If Mendy came on loan, Harrison would have to go back.

There’s no way Bielsa would let that happen.

In other Leeds United news, Ian Wright urged one player to “step up” after the defeat to Tottenham.
