AS Roma want to sign Diego Llorente from Leeds United permanently then sell him in major twist
AS Roma are planning to trigger the permanent option to sign Leeds United loanee Diego Llorente and then sell him on this summer, according to Metropolitan Magazine.
Writing on their website (20 February), the news outlet report that the Serie A giants have a buy-clause worth £4.2m to sign the former Spain international permanently with a deal said to be “one step away”.
They will be obliged to trigger the option if he plays at least 50% of fixtures this season, but with Paris Saint-Germain showing an interest in the player they are planning to sell him on for almost double the amount to make a significant profit.
“Diego Llorente will remain in Trigoria until June, will be bought out for a modest sum (5 million euros/£4.2m), and will then be reinserted onto the market output,” they wrote.
“The French themselves, at this point, could launch the decisive attack by offering 10/12 million euros (£8.5-10.2m). A capital gain that would significantly help the Roma supporters’ coffers.”
Leeds United being hurt by poor planning
Lets be clear, there is no doubt that Llorente has absolutely no future at Elland Road or with Leeds.
However the club have clearly agreed a permanent buy-clause option just to get him out of the door and not thought about the potential value of a deal after a year of him playing regularly.
Now Roma are likely to be the ones who are able to cash in on that, despite Leeds being the ones who own him as things stand.

Daniel Farke spoke in the summer about Leeds needing to be able to control the market when they’re selling players, and this is why. They now have no power to stop Roma doing this, and it’s them who will lose out.
With that said however, it’s important for the team to get Llorente off the books because of the fact he has no future at the club and they don’t want to be stuck with him. It’s a shame, but it is what it is now and it’s something the 49ers must learn from going forward.
