Argentinian journalist shares Leeds United stance on Ben Brereton transfer report

Leeds United have distanced themselves away from a move for Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton, according to Claudio Mauri.

The Argentinian journalist, followed by Phil Hay on his verified Twitter profile, was responding to a recent report by Chilean news outlet RedGol, who claimed Marcelo Bielsa was eyeing a move for the “Powerful” [Blackburn Rovers club website] 22-year-old forward.

Attaching an image of the said report on his personal Twitter profile, Mauri wrote: “The answer is ‘false’ from Leeds United about this rumour.”

Quickly shut down

The Chilean report wasn’t long published before a seemingly well-sourced journalist moved to play it down.

Furthermore, Mauri claims the denial has actually come from the club themselves.

He appears to be a fairly well-placed journalist when it comes to the Whites, often chronicling his countryman Bielsa and with the all-important Phil Hay seal of approval, The Athletic journalist who is usually the one in the know when it comes to matters of Leeds United.

We were skeptical when we first saw the Brereton report, but it did come from a verified source, so it wasn’t something to be swiftly dismissed.

However, despite his emergence on the international stage after scoring the winner for Chile in their Copa America clash against Bolivia last Friday [18/06/21], it always seemed rather fanciful that he would end up signing for Leeds this summer.

Seven Championship goals for Blackburn last season isn’t exactly setting the world alight, so while we need a versatile forward capable of playing on the wings or up front, we can’t foresee that being Brereton at this point.

He does look like an exciting prospect that could flourish under Bielsa with his physical qualities, but that’s not enough to earn him a move to West Yorkshire just yet, and we’d like to see him prove himself in the second-tier once more next season.

In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has opened the door for this ex-Whites man to return to Elland Road.
