‘Answer from Leeds’ – Argentine journalist posts major update in Whites hunt for near-£20m CB

Argentine journalist Claudio Mauri has said that Leeds United have “zero” interest in River Plate centre-back Lucas Martinez Quarta.

Leeds had been linked with a move for the Argentina international who reportedly has a £19.9m release clause.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay had said that the club were scouting him, although he added that domestic players were the main focus for Leeds.

Mauri’s tweet translates as: “Answer from #LeedsUnited for the alleged interest in Lucas Martínez Quarta: ‘Zero, just like when Foyth was mentioned.'”

Centre-back hunt will heat up

Ben White has been sensational for Leeds at the back this season.

However, while Leeds fans are desperate for him to stay, his future is uncertain.

Some fans and even media outlets are looking for any hint that White might be staying – the latest stretch is an Instagram story he put up showing himself with a gold aura walking next to Marcelo Bielsa.

If that’s a message to Brighton that he wants to stay at Leeds then he might be better off reverting to smoke signals.

White has obviously enjoyed his time at Leeds and has come out of his season-long loan as a much, much better player.

He might feel he will be better off with another season at Leeds but he will have a big decision to make, with Champions League teams likely to be interested in him.

As for Quarta, the news that Leeds have zero interest in him could mean that the club has moved on and is looking at other targets.

It does seem that there was some interest at some point, although focusing on domestic players, we think, would be a safer approach to life in the Premier League.

One thing is certain: Leeds will need to bring in a new centre-back this summer.
