Archie Gray to complete Brentford medical on Saturday after £40m Leeds United exit agreed

Archie Gray is set to complete his Brentford medical by Saturday night ahead of a £40million move away from Leeds, according to Graham Smyth.

Writing on his personal X account (29 June), the YEP journalist reports that the Bees are hoping to ttie the deal up “ASAP” to avoid Tottenham, Chelsea and other clubs potentially hijacking the deal.

The Whites have agreed a deal worth an initial £35million for the 18-year-old, with an extra £5million in add-ons as they look to avoid a PSR breach following their failure to reach the Premier League.

Leeds United praying for a hijack to make extra funds on Archie Gray sale

If there’s one way to justify the sale of Gray to a Premier League club this summer, it was that he would be joining a top team who can offer wages and European football that Leeds cannot.

But with Brentford seemingly winning the race for the generational midfielder, it has left fans angry and annoyed as many will feel they could and should be in the position the west London club are in had they been run properly in recent years.

£40million is a huge chunk of money for the club for a player with just one year of senior football under his belt, and with a PSR breach looming it is probably an amount the club simply couldn’t refuse.

But one way to make it up to fans would be the somehow drive that price up even higher, by encouraging those top teams to hijack the bid by gazumping Brentford at the last minute.

Ultimately it doesn’t matter anymore because he won’t be at Elland Road next season and that’s a huge shame, but a bigger fee will at least make it feel more worthwhile.
