Archie Gray has a release clause in his Leeds United contract which expires on Sunday 30 June as he closes in on a move to Brentford, according to talkSPORT.

The outlet reported on its website on Saturday (29 June) that the Bees' offer is set to rise to £40million including add-ons is understood to be higher than the clause included in his contract at Elland Road.

Brentford opted to pay more than this clause to try and get the deal done as quickly as possible and they have also offered the versatile midfielder a contract worth £75,000-a-week.

Gray is expected to complete a medical with Thomas Frank's side which will reportedly be concluded on Saturday as Brentford look to avoid a late hijack with several other Premier League clubs also holding an interest [].

Does Archie Gray have a release clause in his Leeds United contract?

It is interesting that this release clause in Gray's current Leeds United contract has only now come to light after the Whites accepted a bid for the midfielder and it begs the question, just what was the value of it?

If it is lower than the £40million including add-ons that Brentford are set to pay, surely the Whites ran the risk of losing one of their most prized assets for a cut-price fee after they missed out on promotion back to the Premier League.

Either way, it doesn't seem as though it is going to come back to bite Daniel Farke's side this season as Gray may well not be a Leeds player by the time it expires and the Bees have already blown the clause out of the water.

It is a blow to the club and its fanbase to lose one of their brightest talents so early in the window, but the Whites will hope this big-money sale will help them keep the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Illan Mesiler.

If more big-name stars depart, however, pressure will begin mounting on those at the top of the club from the supporters.
